Pulmonary function testing
Pulmonary function testing (spirometry) allows early detection of lung diseases and monitoring of the therapy progress.
When is pulmonary function testing necessary?
- breathing problems
- shortness of breath
- chronic coughing
- lung diseases
- when checking your suitability for diving
Pulmonary function testing allows detection of:
- Asthma bronchiale
- Chronic bronchitis
- Chronic obstructive lung diseases (COPD)
- Emphysema
The procedure
Pulmonary function testing continuously measures the lung volumes and produces a chart that can then be interpreted.
For measurement patients orally breathe through a small pipe. The data is then analysed via computer.
